BUILDING A DREAM...
From an Old Country School House
In 1954, S.B.(Sherwood) Smith began his grocery business in the corner of a feed & fertilizer store, located in the old Dortches School House.
In 1964, he moved to a new cinderblock building expanding his grocery business to include general merchandise, gas and pork processing.
In the mid 60's, Bruce Smith joined his dad, in the family business. The years brought change as the primarily general merchandise store expanded to become a full-fledged grocery store in 1974.
As the business continued to grow and prosper, the Smiths realized the need for a modern store and built a new one, measuring 10,000 square feet, in 1980. In 1987, they added an additional 3,000 square feet.
The renovations gave the store a completely new front and a deli department, in addition to continuing their tradition of quality meats.
In 1992, the Smiths saw a need for more expansion, and built a brand new store beside the existing one, increasing the square footage to over 20,000. In the mid-1990's, after the passing of his father, Bruce continued to carry on the family tradition, with high regard for freshness and quality. The store-front was remodeled and an instore bank was added for customer convenience.
Following in the family tradition, a third generation was added in 1999. It was with great pleasure that Bruce's son, Derrick, became full-time in the family business. Over the years, Smith's has had a number of valuable employees that help continue the Smith's legacy of quality, service and community pride.
To keep Smith's tradition growing in 2009, we added a large selection of old fashioned candies, consisting of over sixty plus flavors, you may mix or match to your personal liking. In 2010, we remodeled the inside of the store, adding a decor package to complement our country heritage.
We were also excited and grateful for the new Smith's Red & White Restaurant we opened in Spring, 2010. The Restaurant is located right beside the store, and features Smith's BBQ, country ham, country link and patty cake sausage, along with many of our other products.
